Steven Moffat has been teasing next season’s writing line-up with a promise of excitement, revealing: “…we’ve had meetings today with two writers who’ve never written Doctor Who before. If I told you their names, your brain would explode … brilliant, prominent and amazing writers.”
Here are a few names that we feel might fit the brain-exploding bill…
Jesse Armstrong
On the subject of Black Mirror, one of the show’s finest episodes, the brilliantly troubling ‘The Entire History of You’, was not written by Brooker, but rather by one half of the writing partnership behind the sitcoms Peep Show and Fresh Meat.
Jesse Armstrong also has a Capaldi connection too, as a contributor to both The Thick of It and its movie spin-off In the Loop.
Of course, Steven Moffat has form here – not only was his background in sitcoms, but he has previously recruited both Richard Curtis (‘Vincent and the Doctor’) and Men Behaving Badly’s Simon Nye (‘Amy’s Choice’) to the Doctor Who cause.
Armando Iannucci
Keeping with The Thick of It connection, writer, director and producer Armando Iannucci would be a great coup for Doctor Who and has expressed his interest to Steven Moffat – though his US show Veep has been keeping him busy.
Iannucci is both a fan and a vocal supporter of the BBC, as well as having a well-established relationship with Peter Capaldi, of course.
Nicholas Briggs
Most famous as the voice of the Daleks, the Cybermen and the Judoon (amongst others), Briggs is the Executive Producer of Big Finish’s Doctor Who audio range, and has most recently been responsible for writing and directing John Hurt’s return to the role of the War Doctor.
He has been responsible for a terrifyingly large number of Doctor Who stories over the years, primarily in audio but also in prose, and has surely earned a shot at writing for the television show. Indeed, Russell T Davies mentioned in a 2013 documentary feature that he regrets not giving Briggs a shot while he was in charge.
Tony Jordan
Working his way up from the mean streets of Walford, EastEnders writer Tony Jordan has written for shows as diverse as Minder and Holby Blue.
Perhaps best known for creating Hustle, Jordan was also a co-creator of the time-travelling police drama Life on Mars and is behind BBC One’s recently launched period mash-up Dickensian.
Peter Capaldi
While primarily working as an actor, Doctor Who’s current leading man has a few writing and directing credits to his name and notably won an Oscar for his short film Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life.
While he does not appear to have tackled anything on this scale before, he certainly knows the character and the show – and appears to have some firm ideas on its direction… such as his desire to see the cloth faced Mondasian Cybermen return.
If you are looking for a head-exploding announcement, surely this would be the one to top any list!
