Star Wars Celebration Japan – news round-up

Posted Filed under

Over the Easter weekend, the Star Wars Celebration event took place in Japan.

Plenty of news flowed from the three days, not least the confirmation of a second movie in the pipeline.

As well as The Mandalorian and Grogu, which lands on May 22nd 2026, there’s to be a 2026 theatrical release.

Star Wars: Starfighter

Set five years after the events of the Skywalker saga, Ryan Gosling will lead the action in Starfighter. The movie begins production this autumn, and he’ll play a brand-new character.

Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) directs, and the film has a release date of May 28th, 2027.

Both the actor and the director on stage at the event for the reveal.

In the world of Disney+, all was quiet on the live-action front – save for the impending Andor season 2 and the already announced Ahsoka season 2. However, there are new animated projects afoot…

Star Wars: Visions presents The Ninth Jedi

The animated anthology series arrives for its third series on October 29th 2025.

Additionally, Lucasfilm’s James Waugh announced a Visions spin-off of longer stories titled Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi.

The series writer/director Kenji Kamiyama took to the stage to explain:

“I made a short story called ‘The Ninth Jedi’ during Volume 1. Director Shiotani is making one more film this time [“Child of Hope”], and it ends with Kara’s departure to look for her father in the first short film.”

“Star Wars: Visions — The Ninth Jedi” features lightsabers that change color depending on one’s Force, according to Kamiyama, and that Kara’s father invented these lightsabers and has been kidnapped.

“What in the world was the reason for such lightsabers,” Kamiyama continues. “I think it will be a story where those secrets will be told.”

Maul – Shadow Lord

The other animated series announced sees a fan favourite lead his own show. Despite being felled by Obi-Wan Kenobi in The Phantom Menace, the former Sith Lord lived on. He appeared in both The Clone Wars and Rebels aminated series, and memorably popped up towards the end of Solo.

Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord

Maul – Shadow Lord will pick up his story after the Clone Wars, as he plots to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire.

The villain will again be voiced by Sam Witwer and the show, currently in production, will debut on Disney+ in 2026.
