The Last of Us - Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey

The Last of Us – Sky drops a teaser trailer and start date

The much-anticipated Playstation game adaptation is coming in 2023.

(Updated 03/11/22): Following September’s teaser, The Last of Us now gains its launch date.

We knew that The Last of Us was coming in 2023, but now Sky confirm that the much-anticipated show will begin on January 16th, 2023.

Based on the critically acclaimed Playstation game, Sky has the show in all its markets across Europe, while the show airs on HBO Max in the US. We’ll be keeping pace with the US airings too, with a 2am simulcast arrangement – the same strategy employed for fellow HBO import House of the Dragon.

Sky have also revealed a first piece of artwork for the show:

We expect more to appear, plus a further trailer in the run up to that January launch date.

The Last of Us – Sky drops a teaser trailer

The much-anticipated Playstation game adaptation is coming in 2023.

While filming began last year, we’ve yet to have a proper taste of The Last of Us – until now. The HBO show, which is set to air on Sky in the UK, has delivered a first teaser trailer.

Adapted from the award-winning video game, The Last of Us comes from Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann (the game’s writer).

The Last of Us

The cast is led by Pedro Pascal, sans Mandalorian helmet, as Joel. His co-star is Bella Ramsey – Game of Thrones‘ feisty Lady Lyanna Mormont – who plays Ellie.

For the uninitiated, here’s the premise for the show:

“The Last of Us story takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.”

“You keep her alive… and you set everything right.”

While the main focus of the trailer is on surviving humanity, there are a few brief glimpses of the mutated foes Joel and Ellie will face; a sign for the symptoms of cordyceps infection is prominent in the opening moments. After scenes with a Clicker, it pushes on to show us some of the epic journey that awaits the pair.

The cast

Joining Pascal and Ramsey are Gabriel Luna (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Anna Torv (Fringe) and Nick Offerman (Devs). The wider ensemble includes Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett, Storm Reid, Merle Dandridge, Jeffrey Pierce, Lamar Johnson, Keivonn Woodard, Graham Greene, Elaine Miles, Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker.

The show is co-produced with Sony Pictures Television. In addition to writers Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, the executive producers are Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Rose Lam. PlayStation Productions, Word Games, The Mighty Mint, and Naughty Dog produce.

Keeping pace with the US

With the show premiering stateside on HBO, Sky and Now are making it available here at the same time. This is the same approach as for House of the Dragon; we expect an early hours linear screening and episodes available On Demand too.

We’ll keep you posted on The Last of Us.
