The first Star Trek: Picard trailer is out, and there’s a huge 7of9 revelation — we bring the details and our thoughts

The official Star Trek site has a first trailer for Star Trek: Picard, and while it starts where we expect, it ends somewhere we believe promises some strong story lines.

The trailer

It starts where you’d predict: the chateau (or similar location), and Patrick Stewart reminding us that Jean-Luc Picard is not as sprightly as he once was. Cue an older John de Lancie popping up as Q and teasing Jean-Luc about his age. The pacing steps up several gears and we get a quick tour of returning characters, locations and the main plot — time has been broken and only one man can lead the charge to put it all back together… and slow back down to…

The 7of9 revelation

The pacing is relaxed as we see Jeri Ryan’s character waking up from sleep. As she gets up, careful camera angles tease, but even knowing what’s to come, the reveal is powerful. 7of9 is no longer Borg!

What we think

For us, a lot of the power of Star Trek: Picard season 1 actually came from the inclusion of 7of9. Not only are we pleased to see she has a major role, but what a challenging one. It’s implied she knows time has changed from how she reacts to her reflection, and we can see the dilemma now — does she work to restore history even if it means she is to become Borg? Who is she without the impact of her time as one of the Borg? We look forward to seeing how this is handled.

We have to wait. Star Trek: Picard season 2 is coming in 2022. We’ll keep you posted. Until then, there’s always the trailer.
