A television series, a new game and another Tomb Raider movie too?
Last Friday (Jan 27), THR revealed that Phoebe Waller-Bridge is turning her screen-writing attention to a television adaptation Tomb Raider. With video games looking like fertile territory, given the roaring success of The Last of Us, bringing some in-demand talent to pen the show seems a smart move.
We picked up the news of the writer’s latest project getting a pickup by Amazon last March, although reports suggest this isn’t it.
Since the television show news broke, we now understand it is part of wider plans for the character. Apparently, the streamer has teamed with Dmitri M. Johnson’s dj2 Entertainment for a deal which gives them multi-platform rights to Lara Croft. According to THR, the plans are for an interconnected Tomb Raider world including the new show, another video game and a feature film too.
Of course, Tomb Raider is no stranger to the cinema screen. Angelina Jolie starred in two movies in the 2000s, while Alicia Vikander took on the role for a 2015 reboot.
A sequel to that film was in the works, to be directed by Lovecraft Country showrunner Misha Green, although it never came to pass.
On the small screen however, Netflix has an anime series forthcoming with Hayley Atwell voicing Ms. Croft. That’s expected to debut this year.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge
While there’s no suggestion of Phoebe Waller-Bridge starring in the Tomb Raider show, it is part of her wider Amazon deal which includes an adaptation of the China Lux supernatural novel Sign Here.
The actor and writer has been managing dual careers since breaking out with Fleabag. She was showrunner on the first season and executive producer of Killing Eve, as well as co-writing the recent James Bond movie No Time To Die.
On screen, she’s next to appear opposite Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. We imagine you can expect some tomb raiding action there! Additionally, Waller-Bridge is currently filming John Krasinski’s IF alongside Ryan Reynolds, Fiona Shaw and Steve Carell.
We’ll keep you posted on Tomb Raider.
