End of Summer and Jana – Marked For Life, two Swedish psychological thrillers, head to the BBC iPlayer and linear channels.
There seems to be no end of enthusiasm for Nordic Noir at the BBC. Here’s the details of two new Swedish thriller series, both novel adaptations, which the corporation has picked up.
End of Summer
End of Summer is based on former police officer Anders de la Motte’s bestselling novel. The six-part psychological thriller stars Julia Ragnarsson (Midsommar, The Bridge) and Erik Enge (Tigers, The Sandhamn Murders).
The story begins in summer 1984 with 5-year-old Billy disappearing in rural Sweden, and the inconclusive police investigation that follows, shattering the family. Two decades later, Billy’s sister Vera (Ragnarsson), meets a hauntingly familiar young man (Enge), which forces her to unravel the truth behind her brother’s disappearance.
Series directors are Jens Jonsson (Young Wallander) and Henrik Georgsson (The Bridge). Lead writers are Stefan Thunberg (Wallander) and Björn Carlström (Hunters), who also produced the series with Per Janérus (Hunters).
End of Summer is the first in Anders de la Motte’s seasons quartet, so there’s scope for more.
While there’s no BBC trailer yet, you can find one here.
Jana – Marked for Life
Jana – Marked for Life is based on Emelie Schepp‘s 2016 bestseller about a public prosecutor and former child soldier.
The show stars Madeleine Martin (Dystopia), Pernilla August (Star Wars), August Wittgenstein (Das Boot), Zlatko Buric, Thure Lindhardt (The Bridge), Sigrid Johnson, Johan Ulveson, Fredrik Hallgren and Moa Gammel.
During an investigation into the murder of a high-ranking official at the Swedish Migration Agency, the main suspect is also found dead, and Jana immediately recognises something on his scarred body. To understand her own traumatic past, Jana must reach the killer ahead of the police.
The six-part series is created for television and directed by Felix Herngren (The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared) and Henrik Björn (Jordskott).
Marked for Life is the first in a series of novels about Jana Berzelius, so there’s potential for more here too.
Both shows will appear on the BBC iPlayer and on linear channels, but there are no release dates as yet.
