BBC Studios CEO Tom Fussell confirmed that his corporation plans to bid on the BBC’s competitive tender to choose the next producer of Doctor Who.
Speaking to Deadline on BBC annual report day, Fussell confirmed that BBC Studios, formed as an independent commercial production company in 2015, will vie to resume production of Doctor Who, a position the corporation held from 2016 to 2022 before Bad Wolf took over production.

With the details and parameters of the tender not publicly known or announced, Fussell expressed a great deal of confidence in BBC Studios’ larger relationship with the BBC and for BBC Studios’ chances of securing the tender.
“We’ve been the producer for 60 years and we want to be the producer for another 60 years so we will be going for that tender with gusto,” Fussell told Deadline. “We are in it to win it.”
By “we,” it is presumed that Fussell is referring to the BBC as a whole, which debuted Doctor Who 63 years ago. The BBC has the task of deciding which production company’s bid will win the tender with BBC Studios now declaring its intention to bid.

“We’ve got the full breadth of our studio to look at that and we will do the best for an absolute adored brand,” Fussell added. “As the distributor and commercial licensor [of Doctor Who] we understand those fan relationships and can build on that. Doctor Who is something that people in this organization care passionately about.”
The BBC announced its intention to put Doctor Who out to competitive tender on June 10. The Invitation To Tender (ITT) will be publicly posted on the BBC Commissions website some time this year.
