The story of Industrial Light & Magic will pick up right after Jurassic Park

In the world of movie and television special effects, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) have blazed a trail since their founding in 1975.

Now, as spotted by Film Stories, Light & Magic – the series which tells its story – is coming back for a second season on April 18th,

The company provided the magic for the original Star Wars trilogy, before going on to work on Star Trek, ET, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future and more. Their ground-breaking work is an integral part of the history of blockbuster movie making.

While the original run consisted of six episodes, Light & Magic season 2 has just three with director Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger) taking over from Lawrence Kasdan and the story picking in the wake of the success of Jurassic Park.

Covering the remainder of the 1990s and into the 00s, the new episodes take in work on the Star Wars prequel trilogy, Pirates Of The Caribbean, War Of The Worlds and Twister. Given that this era fully embraces digital effects, moving away from the practical work shown in season one, it will be interesting to see how the stories of these productions can be compellingly told.

Light & Magic comes from Lucasfilm Ltd. and Imagine Documentaries. Season 2 lands at Disney+ on April 18th, 2025.
