When its 26-episode deal with Disney concludes in 2026 with the Doctor Who spin-off, The War Between the Land and The Sea, Bad Wolf executive Jane Tranter is reportedly very calm amid speculation on whether streamer Disney+ will renew, and what that might mean for Bad Wolf’s continued involvement.
“What will happen next is between the BBC Studios and Disney+ – and Bad Wolf certainly won’t be the first to know,” Tranter told Broadcast Now, adding with a grin: “I take responsibility for lots of things, but gloriously on this occasion, that one is out of my hands.”
BBC Studios was the original production company for Doctor Who before it was announced in 2021 that Bad Wolf would take over, with Bad Wolf executives Tranter and Julie Gardner once again working with showrunner Russell T Davies. Production then moved from Roath Lock Studios to Wolf Studios Wales and a new TARDIS interior set was constructed. The TARDIS set remains standing and operative at Wolf Studios.
According to Broadcast Now, Tranter believes Disney’s decision on the future of the deal with the BBC will be financial and algorithmically driven.
Tranter insists that, although it attracted criticism from certain elements of the right-wing press, the show’s inclusion of trans and queer characters is not a factor in any decision Disney will make.
“In all honesty, I’ve had no sense from Disney+ that measures up to what is being written about Doctor Who,” she said. “All we can do is tell stories that reflect the world in which we live – not just some of us, but all of us.”
The Doctor Who spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea will transmit on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK, and exclusively on Disney+ outside of the UK (where available) some time in 2026.
