The new issue of Entertainment Weekly features the first official look at Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange movie.
Directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister), the 14th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently shooting in several locations around the world, including London, New York, Hong Kong and Kathmandu, Nepal.
Alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role, Doctor Strange also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor (The Martian), Rachel McAdams (Sherlock Holmes) and Michael Stuhlbarg (Steve Jobs) with Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal) and Tilda Swinton (The Grand Budapest Hotel).
Doctor Strange arrives in UK cinemas on 28 October 2016, following the release of Captain America: Civil War next April, featuring Cumberbatch’s Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman.
Discussing his character’s spell-casting, Cumberbatch told EW: “I’m still in the infancy of learning all that. It was like, okay, I’ve got to keep throwing these poses, these spells, these rune-casting things, everything he does physically. I’m thinking, there’s going to be a huge amount of speculation and intrigue over the positioning of that finger as opposed to it being there, or there. And I’m still working on that. We haven’t played any of those scenes yet. I felt really self-conscious. But, then, by the end, it was great. It’s like anything, you just have to experiment.”
He added: “There’s going to be crazy s*** going on.”
The official synopsis for the movie reads: “Doctor Strange follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.”
The Marvel comic character first appeared in “Strange Tales” Issue #110, published in July 1963.
