Doctor Strange is the 14th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will arrive in UK cinemas on 28 October 2016, following the release of Captain America: Civil War next April, featuring Cumberbatch’s Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman.

The official synopsis reads: “Doctor Strange follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.”

Benedict Cumberbatch The Imitation Game

Benedict Cumberbatch hinted earlier this year that Doctor Strange will bring “a huge new element to [the] Marvel universe”.

Producer Kevin Feige commented: “Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity. In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”

The Marvel comic character first appeared in “Strange Tales” Issue #110, published in July 1963.
