George R R Martin talks Game of Thrones animations

With various spinoffs in progress, the Game Of Thrones creator has revealed one element of the Westerosi animations slate.

We’ve known for a while that George R. R. Martin and HBO have various spinoffs in progress for the Game of Thrones universe.

So far, only one has actually come to fruition as House of the Dragon. Another, Bloodmoon, faltered at the pilot stage. A third, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight (better known as “Dunk and Egg”) was greenlit last year.

Now, in a New Year’s Eve blog post, the GoT creator confirmed that one spinoff idea is sailing towards the world of animation.

Titled Nine Voyages, it follows the House of the Dragon character Lord Corlys Velaryon, aka The Sea Snake, on his legendary journeys around Westeros and beyond.

George RR Martin says…

“We have moved NINE VOYAGES, our series about the legendary voyages of the Sea Snake, over from live action to animation. A move I support fully.

Budgetary constraints would likely have made a live action version prohibitively expensive, what with half the show taking place at sea, and the necessity of creating a different port every week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth to… well, on and on and on.

There’s a whole world out there. And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation. So we now have three animated projects underway.”

What the other two projects might be – who knows. Might one be the rumoured sequel following Jon Snow’s exploits beyond the wall?

We’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, House of the Dragon returns for its second season in the summer.
