Doctor Who Christmas special promises to be “beautiful, joyous, heartbreaking”

With The Doctor Falls wrapping up Doctor Who series 10 this weekend, it then falls to this year’s Christmas special – thus far unnamed – to end the Peter Capaldi era in the TARDIS. We’ve got tears in our eyes already.

Rachel Talalay is directing the final episode for both Capaldi and exiting showrunner Steven Moffat (now that she’s wrapped up her work on World Enough And Time and The Doctor Falls), and in the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine, she’s offered some teases about the Christmas special.

Of the story, she says that “oh, it’s so wonderful. I’m the biggest fan of it. It’s a tour de force. It’s a fanboy’s dream”.

She added that “there’s a certain absolute fanboy-ness to it, which will make you squee – but also it’s a beautiful, joyous, heartbreaking script. Steven is a genius. So I don’t lose sight of how lucky I am. Even when I’m like, ‘how the hell are we going to get this done?’”

Steven Moffat adds in the same issue that the plan will be to still keep the Christmas special funny as well as sad. But it still sounds as thought we’ll be bawling.

Full casting for the Christmas special has yet to be announced. We can confidently say that the episode will screen on December 25th.

The new issue of Doctor Who Magazine is on sale now.
