Doctor Who actor Peter Davison, who played the Fifth Doctor, has given an update on the status of a possible sequel to The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot.
Written and directed by Davison, the half-hour spoof film debuted on the BBC Red Button service and iPlayer in November 2013 to celebrate Doctor Who‘s 50th anniversary, starring Davison alongside Colin Baker (the Sixth Doctor), Sylvester McCoy (the Seventh Doctor) and Paul McGann (the Eighth Doctor).
Davison told DS: “There are two problems, really, in my head. I wouldn’t want to do [a sequel] if it was half-hearted and nowhere near as good as the other one, so it would have to be a good enough idea.”
He added: “The other problem – and it’s a fairly major one – is we had probably the best cast you can imagine. Literally everyone said yes – with one exception – and it’s very difficult to imagine getting that cast together again… and not paying them!”
The actor explained: “I couldn’t really ring up people and ask them to do a day for no money at all – their patience might run out! So if I did come up with a good enough idea, I’d then have to figure out a way of actually paying them some money! All these things are not impossible, but I wouldn’t even want to go down that road unless I thought it could be better!”
Colin Baker commented last year: “There’s a couple of possibilities floating around, but nothing is set in stone. Clearly doing one about the 51st anniversary isn’t going to be interesting. It’s got to be about something else.”
Doctor Who‘s new season began filming in Cardiff in January and will air on BBC One this autumn.
