When interviewed by Belinda Scandal on Your Manchester regarding what role Billie Piper is playing in the Fifteenth Doctor’s regeneration, Russell T Davies couldn’t be pressed to give details on his intentions.
“I have no idea,” Davies said shrugging while refusing to elaborate.
Fans were shocked when Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor regenerated into the form of Billie Piper and the end of the Doctor Who Season Two finale The Reality War. Piper previously played the Ninth Doctor’s companion Rose Tyler and the interface of a sentient weapon called The Moment in the 50th Anniversary special The Day of the Doctor.
The BBC’s plans in regard to any decision to commission more Doctor Who are currently unknown. The absence of any foreknowledge of whether Billie Piper will portray the next Doctor gives the appearance that casting her was no more than a stunt. Fans are left not knowing if this mystery will ever be resolved or who will be tasked with the resolution if more of the programme is eventually commissioned.
Earlier in the interview, Davies comments gave some possible insight into why he chose to introduce stronger elements of mythology into Doctor Who since 2023.
“My house is full of, like, Roman myths and Greek myths… I think a lot of my writing’s been dealing with that ever since.”
At this point, the future of Doctor Who is uncertain. In the meantime, The War Between the Land and the Sea, a spin-off featuring the Sea Devils is slated to transmit later this year.
