Good news and bad news (depending on who you are) – The Big Bang Theory spin-off Young Sheldon has been renewed for a second season, while the long-term future of its parent show is in doubt.
The tip comes from star Johnnt Galecki, who spoke about the cast’s feelings on the matter at TCA. According to him, actors are talking about season 12 like it is the last.
“The only manner in which the cast has discussed wrapping the show has been that we’re all going to be very sad when that day comes,” he said. “But I think at this point everyone’s very comfortable with 12 seasons being a good time to go home and see our families.”
The writing’s been on the wall for some time, with the multiple-season renewal last year (the episodes currently airing are part of season 11) and the launch of Young Sheldon both looking like insurance policies for US network CBS. It helps, of course, that the freshman series is quite good, and a step forward for the channel, format-wise.
“Young Sheldon has made a huge impact on our schedule in the short time it’s been on the air,” said Kelly Kahl, president at CBS Entertainment. “While the show’s DNA is clearly rooted in The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon has staked out its own place in the TV universe with a unique creative tone, brilliant writing and a gifted multi-generational cast.
“We can’t wait to see Chuck, Steve, Jim and Todd’s vision for how the Cooper family deals with Sheldon growing a year older… and smarter.”
