British-born award-winning actress and writer Jean Marsh OBE, died Sunday 13 May at her home in London. She was 90.
Jean Lyndsey Torren Marsh Jean was born on 1 July 1934 in Stoke Newington, London, England.
Marsh co-created and starred in the ITV series Upstairs, Downstairs (1971–1975) the notable British drama series about class in Edwardian England for which she won the 1975 Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her performance as Rose Buck. She reprised the role in the BBC’s revival of the series (2010–2012).
Also among her notable roles were three appearances in Doctor Who as well as the movies Return to Oz (1985) and Willow (1988).
Marsh appeared in Doctor Who stories as Joanna, Richard the Lionheart’s sister, in The Crusade (1965) and Sara Kingdom in The Daleks’ Master Plan (1965-1966), a role she reprised for the Big Finish audio adventures. She later played Morgaine in Battlefield (1989). She also made an uncredited cameo as a party guest in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary bio-drama An Adventure in Space and Time (2013).
She was married to Doctor Who actor Jon Pertwee from 1955 to 1960.
Her final television appearance was in an episode of the British series Grantchester 2015.
