1066 and all that – get ready for a clash of Kings.

Back in November, the BBC announced its involvement in a grand new retelling of the events which led to the battle of Hastings.

King & Conqueror stars James Norton as Harold, Earl of Wessex and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as William of Normandy – the rivals who clashed over possession of the throne of England in 1066.

We’ve since learned that Emily Beecham, Eddie Marsan, Clémence Poésy and Juliet Stevenson have roles in the eight-part show. As have Jean-Marc Barr, Luther Ford, Geoff Bell, Elliott Cowan, Bo Bragason, Bjarne Henriksen, Olivier Masucci and Clare Holman.

Now, further names have been added to what’s shaping up to be an expansive epic.

Here’s the official synopsis for King & Conqueror:

King & Conqueror is the story of a clash that defined the future of a country – and a continent – for a thousand years, the roots of which stretch back decades and extend out through a pair of interconnected family dynasties, struggling for power across two countries and a raging sea. Harold of Wessex and William of Normandy were two men destined to meet at the Battle of Hastings in 1066; two allies with no design on the British throne, who found themselves forced by circumstance and personal obsession into a war for possession of its crown.

The series comes from creator and executive producer Michael Robert Johnson (Sherlock Holmes). Baltasar Kormákur directs the premiere episode and, as executive producer, will steer the creative across the series.

The show is coming to BBC One, but we’re still waiting on confirmation of an air date. Given the names involved, we imagine there will be plenty of promotion – we’ll keep you posted.
