Netflix have announced that the forthcoming run of The Sandman will be the final season of the show.
The Sandman, which adapts Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed comic series, landed on the streamer in 2022. The gothic fantasy follows the god of Dreams and his interactions with both other gods and the mortal realm.
The show’s follow-up season has been much anticipated, but real world events have superseded it. Gaiman has been mired in accusations of sexual assault since July 2024, which he denies, prompting various projects based on his work to be cancelled or curtailed.
Gaiman has stepped away from Prime Video’s Good Omens, with the show’s concluding season now becoming a single 90-minute finale. Additionally, Dark Horse Comics, which published titles including American Gods, Norse Mythology and Anansi Boys has cut ties. Disney have paused plans for a movie based on The Graveyard Book and a Coraline musical has been scrapped too.
In September, Netflix also cancelled Dead Boy Detectives, part of The Sandman universe, although that may have had more do with uninspiring viewing figures.

Naturally, the streamer is putting a positive spin on its decision.
Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum, The Sandman‘s showrunner Allan Heinberg said:
“The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season. We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”
