Russell T Davies has a memoir coming out on 8 October which is said to contain frank conversations and new information about Doctor Who. The Guardian has already published what is probably the most eagerly-anticipated extract from his book The Queerest of Folk ‒ and there’s a lot to unpack.
Most of what Davies says about the “cooked up” 2026 Doctor Who Christmas special comes as no surprise to anyone who was paying very close attention from 28 October 2025 to 10 June 2026.

Here is the timeline of the Christmas special that will never be ‒ according to Russell T Davies:
April 2025
Davies says in Doctor Who Magazine 617 that he hopes to have the final edit of the 2025 series finale The Reality War finished by 17 April.
“By the time we reached the edit, it was pretty much confirmed that Disney had said no,” Davies said the book excerpt published in The Guardian.
Prior to then, Davies had a presentiment that the Disney deal wouldn’t continue to a third series and began work on other projects.
“Deep down I thought it wouldn’t.
Then comes the problem with how to break the news to the general public.
“The BBC is always slow to act in a crisis, just because it’s such a vast institution. And at the same time, people were leaving the BBC, like [chief content officer] Charlotte Moore [Who left in early June 2025], who’d always been one of Doctor Who’s greatest champions. But now she was gone. And the BBC never knows how to deliver bad news. In fairness, who does, really? And the BBC has vast press barons and rightwing media poised to attack every decision it makes, so no wonder it’s nervous. As a result, there was a delay of months when none of us could say anything and none of us could do anything, because they wanted to get all the right pieces in place to say how and why this show had faltered.”
“So you can see why there was a delay. We couldn’t launch a new tranche of episodes saying: ‘Oh, by the way, this deal’s falling apart.’ I completely got that.”
Due to Ncuti Gatwa’s decision to leave the role of the Fifteenth Doctor, The Reality War was re-edited with footage shot in early February 25 to end with an open-ended Fifteenth Doctor regeneration.
“We were stuck in limbo with many months of inaction, while I sat there watching an ending that looked like too much of an ending. So I summoned a Zoom with all our execs, and I said: ‘We can’t transmit this.’ We need someone to step in. We need someone to be there. Someone for him to physically regenerate into in front of our eyes. We decided the Doctor should regenerate into … Billie Piper!”

31 May 2025
The Reality War transmits with the new footage shot in February 2025 plus the extra footage shot with Billie Piper some time in April. The Fifteenth Doctor has now regenerated into the form of Billie Piper.
28 October 2025
The BBC finally admits that Disney has not renewed for future series. They announce plans to make a Christmas special for 2026. These plans were not finalized with Davies or Bad Wolf.
“So when it came to announce the end of the Disney deal, the BBC was very keen to announce the existence of a Christmas Special for 2026 at the same time, to confirm its dedication to the show. Now, I had my doubts, right from the start – a Christmas Special about what, who for, where’s the money coming from? – but for the first time in my life, I allowed my name to go on a press release that I actually felt kind of queasy about. That’ll teach me!”

March 2026
The BBC eventually draws up the contract for a 2026 Doctor Who Christmas special with Bad Wolf. This presents a notable timing predicament for a special with a lengthy post-production period on top of the time it takes for writing, casting, pre-production and principal photography. Will the special be ready in time for Christmas transmission?
“I didn’t even get a contract to write the Christmas Special until the end of March 2026, after it had been announced in October 2025.”
There was some thought of delaying the Christmas special until Easter 2027.
“And then I got very busy with Tip Toe, busier than I’d expected, because Channel 4 wanted to transmit it as fast as possible; it was so topical, and it had dialogue about Keir Starmer and Kemi Badenoch that risked being out of date if we didn’t hurry up. And then Billie got busy on that tremendous Netflix show, Wednesday, so time kept slipping away. We even wondered if it could become an Easter Special for 2027. For a while, I became obsessed with the notion of a Christmas story transmitting at Easter, because, as part of the plot, time was out of joint. The Doctor running around shouting: “It’s not really Christmas!” A bit meta, but fun.”
“But then I thought: listen to yourself. What are you saying? A Christmas Special at Easter, which is then leading to … what? At exactly the same time, plans sped up at the BBC.”

April 2026
A fan who encountered Davies in Manchester Piccadilly and expressed enthusiasm about the Christmas special said Davies replied with “We’ll see.” Cardiff-based people on X begin reporting that crew who were normally expected to be called back were told the special isn’t happening.
6 May 2026
There is a frank discussion and a decision between Davies and the BBC.
“I went to the BBC on 6 May 2026 and said: ‘I don’t think we should be making this.’ And I didn’t say this next part out loud, but I thought with all my heart: the BBC is in financial trouble; it’s laying off thousands of jobs in the newsroom, so should it really spend millions, with no co-production money, on a Doctor Who one-off that will soon be eclipsed by a whole new era? ‘Put your energy and imagination into the future,’ I said. And to be honest, I think they’d been waiting for me to say it. We’d all been too polite with each other, them not wanting to let me down, me not wanting to let them down. But this new plan sets the show free. The future can be planned by a brand-new team. Clean and bold and bright.”
May 2026
Davies is very busy with promotion of his new Channel 4 drama Tip Toe. On 15 May, takes some time from his busy schedule to be interviewed for a fundraiser in Cardiff. Though, the talk is promoted to be about his life an career, he neglects to mention the 2026 Doctor Who Christmas special. Later in the month, Davies reports that he isn’t filming anything until 2027.
1 June 2026
During Davies’ press tour for Tip Toe, interviewers were conspicuously tip-toeing around questions of the Doctor Who Christmas special. On The Radio 2 Breakfast Show, host Gary Davies instead asked Russell T Davies about the future of Doctor Who.
“You will get an announcement!” Davies precipitately replied. “There’s a press release lumbering through the BBC which, as you know, is like the Jurassic period and 57 people have to sign off on every single word so I promise you, oh, in about a week or two weeks, there will be some sort of press release…”

10 June 2026
The BBC finally announces that there will be no Christmas special in 2026 and that Doctor Who will be offered to independent production companies for competitive tender.
Though Davies never wrote a script for the special, he did share three words he planned to include in it in Doctor Who Magazine 624, Bafflers, Winternox and village.
“But I did have a story,” Davies continued in the book excerpt. “I pitched it to the BBC, and they loved it. An olde-worlde English village intercut with a huge, mysterious spaceship, an outer-space festival called Winternox, and lots and lots of Daleks, with something very unexpected hidden away … Oh, yes, I liked it!”

The Queerest of Folk: A Life in Television by Russell T Davies is available to pre-order for an 8 October 2026 release.
