A future Enterprise Captain who will appear alongside Michelle Yeoh in the Section 31 movie – plus, the ‘Kelvin Timeline’ movie has a new writer.
With Star Trek‘s television series well-distributed across the Federation’s timeline, there’s plenty of scope for exploration of characters before we first met them on screen.
The shining example of this is the terrific Strange New Worlds, which is busy building its way towards the Enterprise crew of the original series. With Spock, Uhura and Nurse Chapel already in place, we’ve had multiple encounters with Lt. James T. Kirk and, in the Season 2 finale, met future Enterprise Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott.
Now, thanks to an excellent long form article at Variety, we know that we’re going to meet another early iteration of a character from the franchise’s canon in the forthcoming Section 31 television movie.
In his piece, writer Adam B. Vary reveals that the film will see Michelle Yeoh’s former mirror universe Empress Phillipa Georgiou encounter a young Rachel Garrett (Kacey Rohl). For the uninitiated, Garrett appeared in ‘Yesterday’s Enterprise’, a time-bending 1990 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, as the gutsy but ill-fated captain of the USS Enterprise C.
It might be a deep continuity cut, but writer Craig Sweeny says:
“It was always my goal to deliver an entertaining experience that is true to the universe but appeals to newcomers. I wanted a low barrier of entry so that anybody could enjoy it.”
The article also speaks to Strange New Worlds cast members Anson Mount and Ethan Peck, and drops some details for the forthcoming Starfleet Academy YA series too.
Another Star Trek movie writer
There’s also news on the fourth big screen outing for Chris Pine’s version of Captain Kirk. Plans for a Star Trek 4 are still underway, with writer Steve Yockey (The Flight Attendant, Dead Boy Detectives) now boarding the project.
This is expected to be the final outing for the ‘Kelvin Timeline’ cast who rebooted the franchise with Star Trek in 2009. Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013) followed, with Star Trek Beyond landing in 2016. However, a fourth movie has struggled to get off the ground since, despite various attempts.
We’ll keep you posted on all things Star Trek.
