Star Trek: Strange New Worlds drops its Lower Decks crossover early

The much-anticipated episode premiered at the San Diego Comic Con, along with a bundle of Star Trek news.

As the seventh episode in Strange New World’s second season, ‘Those Old Scientists’ wasn’t expected to land until Thursday 27th July. However, in the wake of its SDCC premiere, the episode has dropped early on Paramount+.

The story sees two Lower Decks characters, Ensigns Brad Boimler and Beckett Marnier, make the leap to live-action as they visit Captain Pike’s Enterprise. It even boasts a special animated version of the show’s title sequence.

The early release hastens the rollout of Strange New Worlds. ‘Under the Cloak of War’ now lands on Thursday 27th July, ‘Subspace Rhapsody’ arrives on 3rd August and the season concludes with ‘Hegemony’ on 10th August.

Also, it has been revealed that ‘Subspace Rhapsody’ is the franchise’s first musical episode. The episode contains ten songs written by Kay Hanley and Tom Polce.

The episode also has a beautiful poster too…

Lower Decks Season 4

Speaking of Lower Decks, the animation’s fourth run now has its official launch date. The show returns with a double-episode premiere on 7th September 2023.

The reveal at SDCC came with a trailer which promises a visit to the Ferengi home world…

There’s also a new poster continuing the show’s series of homages to Star Trek‘s big screen outings. This one, naturally, takes its cues from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

Discovery Season 5

It’s easy to forget that there’s a fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery waiting in the wings too.

The final run is expected in early 2024 and sees “Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well … dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.”

While 2022’s SDCC brought a first-look teaser for the season, this year’s brings a lengthy, action-packed clip. It introduces us to the voice of Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) as well as seeing the return of David Cronenberg’s Dr Kovich as the Discovery crew are on the trail of a pair of scavengers.

We’ll keep you posted on Star Trek.
