The show, set in the High Republic era, told the story of a pair of force sensitive twins.
According to a Deadline report, Disney+’s The Acolyte won’t be continuing to a second season.
The show, from showrunner Lesley Headland, is a mystery-thriller set in the Star Wars universe’s High Republic era. It began with a spate of murdered Jedi and span out into a drama concerning the destiny of a pair of force sensitive twins played by Amandla Stenberg.
The series also starred Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Jodie Turner-Smith, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, Charlie Barnett, Dean-Charles Chapman and Carrie-Anne Moss.
Despite starting well, The Acolyte failed to maintain its audience figures and dropped out of the Nielsen’s Top 10 originals chart after episode 3, only managing to scrape back in for its finale. In the current streaming climate, that’s clearly not enough for a high budget show.
Possibly the combination of placing the show in a new era, without any familiar characters was part of the issue. Additionally, there was a vocal section of the Star Wars fanbase who complained about the diverse cast, although we’d like to hope their impact was minimal.
The Star Wars universe
In the streaming world, Star Wars stablemates Ahsoka and Andor both have second seasons in the works. Plus, The Mandalorian crosses to the big screen next for The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026.
The Star Wars’ universe’s next television show is Skeleton Crew, which launches on December 3rd. With a cast of child heroes, it’s aiming towards a younger, family audience. Let’s hope it fares better!
