He will play “Dodger” in an international, character-driven story set in the 1850s.
Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, we’ve learned that Disney+ have revealed the cast details for their upcoming period drama The Artful Dodger.
The show develops the story of Oliver Twist’s “Dodger”; it reveals him living a new life in Australia as a surgeon, but unable to shake his criminal past.
First announced in May, the show is one of Disney+’s first to come from Australia. With Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Pistol, The Queen’s Gambit) in the lead role, it also stars David Thewlis (Landscapers, The Sandman) as Fagin.
Here’s how Disney describe the show:
“From high-octane heists to life-and-death surgeries, glittering parties to colorful streets, this series is a rock’n’roll tale with an Aussie connection.”
Joining Brodie-Sangster and Thewlis in the cast are Maia Mitchell as Lady Belle Fox and Tim Minchin (Upright, Californication).
The wider ensemble includes Damon Herriman (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Miranda Tapsell, Susie Porter, Kym Gyngell, Damien Garvey, Jessica De Gouw, Andrea Demetriades, Luke Carroll and Huw Higginson. Additionally, the show features newcomers Lucy-Rose Leonard, Nicholas Burton, Jude Hyland, Finn Treacy and Albert Latailakepa.
The eight-episode series is a co-production between Sony Pictures Television, Beach Road Pictures and Curio Pictures. The writers are James McNamara, Andrew Knight, Vivienne Walshe and Dan Knight, with Miranda Tapsell. The directors are Jeffrey Walker (Modern Family), Corrie Chen and Gracie Otto.
The Artful Dodger is co-created and executive produced by Beach Road Pictures’ David Maher and David Taylor. Jo Porter executive produces for Curio Pictures. The co-executive producers are James McNamara, Andrew Knight and Jeffrey Walker. The producer is Ross Allsop.
The show’s is filming in New South Wales and expected to land on Disney+ in 2023.
