The television version of Erik Axl Sund’s novel will star Eve Myles, Katherine Kelly and Dougray Scott.

Paramount+ have announced an adaptation of the thriller novel The Crow Girl. Produced by Buccaneer (Irvine Welsh’s Crime, Marcella), the story will play out across six hour-long episodes.

This announcement comes just weeks after Paramount+ pulled the plug on a number of international shows. They included two of Buccaneers – The Burning Girls and The Doll Factory, as well as Jodie Whittaker’s Australian drama One Night which has disappeared from its platform.

Transplanting the action to a UK setting, The Crow Girl begins with the discovery of a teenage boy’s body discarded in plain sight. Determined to find who is responsible, DCI Jeanette Kilburn joins forces with psychotherapist Sophia Craven to hunt the killer despite opposition from her superiors including confidant DI Lou Stanley.

The investigation takes them into a dangerous world of historic abuse and murder. Together they uncover a chain of shocking events that have gone overlooked for decades, as well as evidence of police corruption. As the body count rises and the two women are dragged into the depths of the murders, an intimacy starts to form between them, and so begins a complex, twisted love story. All the while, the killer is inching ever closer to home.

Eve Myles (Torchwood, Keeping Faith) stars as Jeanette Kilburn, with Katherine Kelly (Class, The Long Shadow) as Sophia Craven and Dougray Scott (Vigil) as Lou Stanley.

The wider cast includes Clara Rugaard, Victoria Hamilton, Elliot Edusah, Chloe Sweetlove and Lee Boardman.

Milly Thomas

The series is the first major TV writing gig for Milly Thomas, who has previously played roles in both The Crown and Sex Education.

“I’ve been aching to dive into this story ever since I got my paws on the strange, twisty beast of a novel and to be making this show alongside the fierce talents of Paramount+ and Buccaneer is a real joy.

Erik Axl Sund is the pen name of Swedish duo Jerker Eriksson and Håkan Axlander Sundquist. The Crow Girl is the first part of a trilogy which includes The Hunger Fire and The Pythia’s Instructions.

The Crow Girl is directed by Charles Martin and Rebecca Rycroft, while Andy Mosse produces. Executive producers are Tony Wood and Richard Tulk-Hart, as well as Milly Thomas.

The series has commenced filming in Bristol.
