The Famous Five – BBC reveal cast for their new adaptation

The show features a bunch of fresh faces, plus a former king of Westeros!

Last month, the BBC announced a run of three new adaptations of The Famous Five. Now, we have the cast details and a first image. Enid Blyton’s classic tales are getting a modern spin under the eye of the Danish director/producer Nicolas Winding Refn.

The show’s young leads are Diaana Babnicova (George), Flora Jacoby Richardson (Anne), Kit Rakusen as (Dick) and Elliott Rose (Julian). A bearded collie cross named Kip completes the Five, in the crucial role of Timmy the dog.

In the wider ensemble, Ann Akinjirin (Moon Knight) is Fanny, James Lance (Ted Lasso) is Quentin and Diana Quick (Father Brown) plays Mrs Wentworth. Plus, in a rare television return, Jack Gleeson (Game of Thrones’ Joffery) plays Wentworth. He looks like a wrong’un to us!

While the original press release referred to a reimagining, the images suggest the adaptation is keeping to a period setting. Enid Blyton’s 21 books were published between 1942 and 1963.

Tim Kirkby, executive producer and episode one said:

“Our brilliant young cast are mind-blowingly talented and, along with Kip (playing Timmy), they are already bringing these gorgeous characters to life in a fresh and modern way. Together with the brilliant Jack, Ann, James and Diana we can’t wait to bring these glorious, action-filled, epic, family adventures to the screen.”

The series comes from Moonage Pictures and byNWR Originals, with executive producers Nicolas Winding Refn, Matthew Read, Will Gould, Frith Tiplady, Christina Bostofte Erritzøe, Kimberly Willming and Matthew Bouch. The three episode directors are Tim Kirkby (Fleabag), Asim Abbasi (Count Abdulla) and Bill Eagles (Pennyworth).
