The Irregulars is cancelled after just one season
Only a few weeks ago we brought news of filming being scheduled in Liverpool for what seemed to be season 2, but Netflix has obviously rethought and The Irregulars is cancelled. The news was broken on Deadline, and while several other shows manage to survive cancellation by moving to other networks (Lucifer being the most obvious example) we don’t see that happening here.
Last week we reported The Irregulars topping the Nielsens, this is clearly not enough to justify another series. Neither are ratings from sites such as Rotten Tomatoes where critics gave it 78%, though the audience score is a much lower 55%. We got mixed views here at Cultbox: on the one hand (as we said in our review) it was a patchwork Holmesian horror — it had flaws, but it also had charms. We assume the cancellation is down to a mix of reviews / audience / schedule congestion. We of course wish all those involved well, and look forward to seeing them in future productions. This cuts the number of Sherlock Holmes inspired titles in the Netflix portfolio — we will keep an eye out for more news of other titles filling the gap this version has left.
