Utopia is cancelled after just one season by Amazon

Utopia is cancelled by Amazon Prime after just one season, failing to hit the success of the Channel 4 original.

Utopia is cancelled might be the title of a future novel set in 2020, but until then it’s the news Amazon Prime has cancelled its US set remake of Channel 4’s Utopia. The new version appeared on September 25 this year, but attracted average reviews and made little impact on the audience (Rotten Tomatoes has a 51% rating from critics and no rating from the audience). We have to say it’s been on our watchlist for the past couple of months, but never made it to the top. Curiously, perhaps, both it and the original two seasons of the Channel 4 original series can both be seen from free on Amazon Prime (here and here).

If you don’t know, the central plot is: a conspiracy thriller that follows a group of young fans who come together when they discover that the conspiracy in an elusive comic, Utopia, is real. The original Channel 4 series was cancelled after two seasons (as we reported here) but did garner very positive reviews, if a low audience share. The Amazon version starred John Cusack in his first regular role in a TV series as well as Rainn Wilson, Farrah Mackenzie, Christopher Denham and Cory Michael Smith.
