In the wake of the SAG-AFTRA strike resolution, Netflix’s monster hit Addams Family series is understandably a priority for the streamer.
Despite being available for a year, Wednesday‘s popularity endures and the show maintains its number 1 spot atop Netflix’s Top 10 list for its most popular English-language series. That’s thanks to an impressive 252 million views (so far!)
The series follows the teenage Wednesday (Jenna Ortega), the daughter of Morticia and Gomez Addams. Sent to attend her parent’s alma mater, the Nevermore Academy, she finds murder and mystery at every turn.
Now, a Deadline report suggests that the show hopes to recommence production in late-April 2024. However, to ease the logistics, filming will now take place in Ireland rather than Romania.
Wednesday Season 2
While plans are still understandably under wraps, we have some hints of where the story might go.
Back in December 2022, co-showrunner Al Gough talked about Wednesday building friendships:
“We wanna sort of explore and sort of complicate all of those relationships going forward. The school was closed when they left, which gave us the most possibilities for season two, and I think that’s something that we’re excited to explore. For us, the show also is really about this female friendship, with Wednesday and Enid really being at the center of that. The fact that they really connected with audiences, it has been really gratifying. So, we’re excited to explore now that Wednesday’s dipped her toe into the friendship pool, what’s that gonna look like? It’s like, she hugged. That was her big arc for the season, right? So it’s like now, we do that.”
And focussing on her relationship with Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones):
“Then, the other thing that’s really interesting is to continue to explore the Wednesday-Morticia mother-daughter relationship as well, which now that Morticia knows about the power, it has given her sort of an idea of how that’s going to go. How is their relationship going to evolve?”
Bolder, more dark
More recently, star Jenna Ortega, who takes an executive producer role on season 2 has talked (in Variety) about a shift in the show’s tone saying:
“It’s still coming together, but we’ve decided we want to lean into the horror more. We’re going to get bolder, more dark.”
With filming yet to commence, we’d guess that Wednesday season 2 is probably on course for a 2025 release, or possibly late 2024.
Before then, Jenna Ortega has a role in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice 2, which also reunites Michael Keaton and her Wednesday castmate (and Addams Family movie star) Winona Ryder. That’s slated for release in September 2024.
