Watch new behind the scenes ‘Doctor Who’ video with Matt Lucas

Matt Lucas has recorded a short behind the scenes video on location to celebrate his first day back filming Doctor Who.

It was officially announced earlier this month that the comedy actor will be joining the cast of Doctor Who as a regular in Season 10, which began filming last week.

Lucas commented: “We’re at Cardiff University today, doing some running around.”

The Little Britain actor joked: “That’s nice, trying to keep me fit, maybe I’ll lose some weight – my mother will be very happy!”

Matt Lucas made his debut as Nardole, who met the Doctor on the human colony of Mendorax Dellora in the year 5343, in last year’s Christmas special, ‘The Husbands of River Song’.

He recently revealed that “Nardole is becoming more textured” in the new episodes.

Oh, he’s lovely. He’s going to be great! I love these behind the scenes things that they have been doing in recent series. Look forward to seeing loads of snippets this year. So exciting and Peter looks so gorgeous in his newest threads and that fabulous Pertwee hair and Pearl is already proving she is going to be just the best!

Has anyone else seen the news that series nine is up for the TV Choice Awards as ‘Best Family Drama’ and that Peter Capaldi is up for ‘Best Actor’? Good to see some recognition for what was easily and indisputably the best season of Doctor Who since the revival and yet another welcome shout of “UP YOURS!” to the elitist snobs at BAFTA.

    • Marcie

Yay. Popular voting too, so who says Peter and the show have dropped in popularity? BAFTA judges are just numpties and lost all credibility last year by snubbing Capaldi. With a possible Emmy nomination in the offing too for Peter, thry look like reet fools now.

    • MargaretL

Yes. Good to hear. The BAFTA snub for Peter and the show was weird and a bit fishy. On one hand every TV critic in the big papers, Radio Times plus the main genre sites here and US (DoG, SFX, AV Club, Vulture, Cultbox) hailed series 9 as the best since 2005 and maybe best ever and without exception that Peter’s turns in the Zygon two parter and Heaven/Hell were not just the best in Who history but one of the best by any actor in 2015, yet not a single nomination and Idris Elba who is a great actor gets nominated for Luther which got poor reviews and his own performance meh reviews.

I understand Peter was just outside the BAFTA nominations for Best Actor for series 8, so I would have thought he was a shoo-in for series 9 given the unanimous acclaim. What happened? My bet is that Idris was included to acknowledge his overall stellar turn as Luther, not for his most recent series and that he was robbed of a well deserved Oscar nomination for Beasts of No Nation. Mark Rylance was always going to win that category, so the judges probably slipped Idris’ name instead of Peter’s thinking there would be no harm. At least there was a huge uproar all over the media and not just from Who fans about Peter missing out! Don’t think I’ve seen such a backlash against BAFTA for ages.

Anyway, things are now back on track and we should see Peter picking up the awards he should be getting. This is a fan nominated and voted one but I think even non Who fans will get behind Peter for this one due to the scandal of the BAFTA snub and hope Peter picks up some others along the way. I bet he is on the next eligible BAFTA nominations list for sure!

Can’t wait to see another non-human non-female non-youngster companion in the TARDIS. It’s been too long!

I wonder if Nardole, is going to be a little like the 4th Doctor’s HARRY. Solid, dependable ( although somewhat worried by his own shadow at times ), and teriffically SQUARE; though perhaps more round, in Matt’s case. Harry’s blazer did him proud – and it looks as if Nardole, is going to display a wonderful range of duffle coats.Mr Lucas’s inclusion for series 10, was a surprise: but one I am warming to. Welcome aboard Matt !!! Now what colour duffle coat will you be wearing for episode 2? And will ear muffs and a bobble hat, also make a later appearance?

    • Dr. Moo

Will they go all the way with the Harry Dullivan thing and retcon it that Nardole’s just a head because he got his body bitten off by a giant clam?

      • russell

I know. The Doctor, Sarah and Harry. Quite simply, one of the great team ups.

        • russell

Giant clam eh, Dr. Moo? As Harry said- he was always putting his foot in it!

          • Dr. Moo

I’m was going to have an early night this evening, now I’m going to go and marathon all six parts of Genesis Of The Daleks instead. Thanks a lot Russell! 🙂

          • russell

My pleasure Mooster. Though with such amazing cliff hangers to enjoy ( Boy, no. 1 and 2 in particular )…sleep will NOT be an option.

          • Dr. Moo

“That’s strange. There’s centuries between these two weapons.” – I liked the way Moffat referenced this in TMA last year.

          • Dr. Moo

“K A L E D S… why, that’s an anagram of…! How interesting.” – Classic Tom! I love how he delivers that line. I’d forgotten just how awesome this story is right from the start!

          • Dr. Moo

I’m going to stop doing this now.

          • russell

No problem. It’s great that WHO excites so much…I might just squeeze in a few eps of Genesis myself, before lights out…”- this will be a moment that will go down in history.”

          • Dr. Moo

“Have I the right” to watch the whole of GotD in one night? “Yes, I would do it! And though the Daleks I! CAN! HAVE! THAT! POWER!”

          • russell

“Hands on the Time Ring”. Because you know out of it ..”- must come some good.”

          • russell

Ah… I’ve just realised. Harry was one for a good duffle coat too. Will Nardole do the decent thing, and sport his very own blazer underneath?

  • Marcie

Makes me even happier about having Matt on board. When the actors are all so clearly lovely people with a great sense of fun and get along so well, all good for the show. We saw it with Matt, Karen and Arthur and then Peter, Michelle and Jenna. Certain this is going to be a classic series and with Nardole on board with lots of fun and laughs for the littlun’s, think we’ll see see a lot more viewers since the BBC has promised to put it on at a family friendly time too.

  • Daniel

Looks good. I am hoping we get some behind the scenes films for the series 10 box set when it comes out. A video diary from Pearl or Matt documenting their first year on the show would be excellent. I think we got something like this in the series 5 boxset from Karen and Arthur. Oh, and plesse give us more commentaries, particularly from Peter. The ones on the last boxset were great fun but more Capaldi is a must! While I am at it, where are Peter’s narrations? We know he recorded something a month or so ago. Perhsps the new audio exclusive adventure? One of the many delights of Matt’s, Karen’s and Arthur’s early years were the audio books with their narration.
