Star Wars: Disney hires Game Of Thrones showrunners, planning more new TV series

Posted Filed under

Big news in the world of Star Wars hit overnight, as Disney confirmed that the showrunners of Game Of Thrones – D B Weiss and David Benioff – will be signing up to develop a bunch of new Star Wars movies. They’ll start working on them once they’re done with Game Of Thrones’ final season, that’s set to go into production this year.

Beyond that, though, it’s also been confirmed that Disney is working on more than one Star Wars series (it’d already effectively announced one live action show was in the works), as it looks to launch its own Netflix-rivalling streaming service. The news was broken by Disney CEO, who told investors that “we are developing not just one, but a few Star Wars series specifically for the direct-to-consumer Disney app”.

He added that “we are close to being able to reveal at least one of the entities that is developing for that”, but wouldn’t at this stage because “the deal isn’t completely closed”. He teased that the level of talent behind the TV shows would be “rather significant”. However, he’s not referring to Weiss and Benioff there, as the pair are working on films, not TV shows. It does sound, though, as though some kind of reveal is coming. May the 4th is, of course, Star Wars day every year. Perhaps news will arrive then?

More as we get it.
