7) “I am not a Dalek.”

Well, this opener to Season 7 was a bit of a surprise, hey?

We knew of course that the Ponds were leaving and that Jenna Coleman was on her way, but to see her pop up in ‘Asylum of the Daleks’ was a huge surprise.

And Moffat made sure we liked her immediately, she was so full of colour and pep… and then they doubled the surprise factor by revealing that she was actually a Dalek. Talk about a curveball; a move at once thrilling, unexpected, and truly heartbreaking.

 

6) “Never trust a hug.”

Well, it wasn’t exactly a jolly end to Peter Capaldi’s first run in ‘Death in Heaven’!

Lying had been a theme throughout the season, so it was very fitting that our leads should end the run doing exactly that; Clara pretending Danny was back from the dead, the Doctor that he had found Galifrey.

But we know the truth. Danny didn’t return, and the Master, of course, lied, causing an angry, despairing Doctor to break down in the TARDIS. Then Clara and the Doctor hug, and a nation’s bottom lip trembles.

 

5) “We’re all stories in the end. Just make it a good one, hey?”

Oh gosh. Matt Smith is simply terrific this scene from ‘The Big Bang’, underplaying things superbly.

Slumped next to a sleeping Amelia Pond, knowing at any moment his whole existence is about to be scrubbed from reality, the Doctor delivers a happy-sad speech, then steps gently off the stage.
