Guaranteed to infuriate anyone who likes to refer to Doctor Who stories with acronyms, this week’s ‘The Zygon Inversion’ was the conclusion of the two-part tale which began with ‘The Zygon Invasion’.
Here are a few suggestions from the Time Lord’s back catalogue that you might enjoy…
‘The Enemy of the World’ (1967-1968)
Doctor Who has taken many cracks at the idea of doppelgangers, from the dubious robot First Doctor in ‘The Chase’ to Nyssa’s double, Ann Talbot, in ‘Black Orchid’.
The most entertaining of these is doubtless Patrick Troughton’s turn as Ramon Salamander in ‘The Enemy of the World’, where the show’s leading man got to play a mad dictator, replete with a Mexican accent and cigar.
Thankfully restored to the archive, the tale hinges on the Doctor’s similarity to the dictator who, of course, has designs on ruling the world.
‘Nightmare in Silver’ (2013)
Not quite a physical doppelganger, but we were ring-side for a barnstorming face-off between two versions of the Eleventh Doctor during Neil Gaiman’s ‘Nightmare in Silver’, as the Time Lord fought off a Cyber-planner which had invaded his mind.
While the new look Cybermen perhaps failed to live up to their promise, and isn’t that sometime the way when you upgrade, we found it impossible not to be mesmerised by Matt Smith’s performance(s).
