5 theories on why the ‘Sherlock’ special is set in 1895

So why exactly is the Christmas special set in 1895? Let’s take a look at some possibilities…

2. Did you miss me?

Sherlock Moriarty 3

Three things to consider.

Can you think of anyone who a) loves to play mind games with Sherlock, b) probably has fairly easy access to bucket-loads of weird, definitely illegal, hallucinogenic drugs, and c) may or may not have made a (wonderfully) dramatic return from the dead at the end of the last season

Moriarty would definitely get a kick out of messing with Sherlock’s head like that. And if Sherlock’s delusions led him to imagine his life as it might be in the 19th century, well… it certainly provides some good entertainment for us. Thanks, Jim.

5. ‘Good morning!’

Benedict Cumberbatch Star Trek

Few plot twists in the history of television caused quite as much shock, outrage and general bewilderment as the famous Dallas shower scene, in which the previously very-much-dead Bobby Ewing was turned out to be very-much-alive and, all together now: it had all just been a dream.

So what’s stopping the Sherlock showrunners from pulling a similar stunt?

It would certainly explain the shift in time period, and it would provide a handy return to the present day by the end of the special, so that Season 4 can continue as usual, in the year 2035. (Sorry.)

And it would no doubt make a lot of Sherlock fans’ Christmas wishes come true if the special happened to finish with Cumberbatch’s Holmes in the shower. Just saying.
