9 things we’re most excited about in the ‘Doctor Who’ Season 9 trailer

“Every time I think it couldn’t get more extraordinary it surprises me…”

Debuting to the excited pocket of space-time known as Hall H at Comic Con in San Diego, and also online to everyone who didn’t spend the best part of a day queuing, the trailer for Doctor Who’s new season reminded us that this is a show that keeps on getting more popular, more ambitious, and no less mysterious.

Season 9 begins on Saturday 19 September and, frankly, we can’t wait.

But we have to. And what better way to fill the time than with rampant speculation and questions? It’s practically demanded of us fans these days.

Hold onto your console, here are 9 thoughts on Season 9’s tantalising trailer

Kiss what?

Doctor Who 9 Peter Capaldi Twelfth

“It’s impossible, I hate it, it’s evil, it’s astonishing… I want to kiss it to death,” The Doctor exclaims, which sounds odd but represents the fun and adventure that Steven Moffat had said the character is striving for this season.

While that could be two disparate lines of dialogue stitched together for the trailer, it’s so weird that it’s probably taken word for word. What could ‘it’ be, and do we see it in the trailer? If it’s that alien with three faces then he’ll have a lot of kissing to do.

Did you Missy me?

Doctor Who 9 Missy Clara

We all knew Missy would be back in the two-part opener, ‘The Magician’s Apprentice’ and ‘The Witch’s Familiar’, but look at her in every clip and she’s not exactly cackling with malevolent glee, is she?

She looks worried. Maybe no one’s said anything nice to her for a while. Executive producer Brian Minchin says we’re going to learn more about her relationship with the Doctor this series. Might it be that the age-old frenemies unite to face a greater threat?

Water always wins

Doctor Who 9

It wouldn’t be Doctor Who without a chase down a corridor. In this case it’s one that’s flooded with water, which means it’s part of the sub-aquatic complex glimpsed in the trailer.

We know this is Toby Whithouse’s two-parter (Episodes 3-4), which he has described as “scary, claustrophobic, damp.”

It certainly looks it. You see quite a few shots from it in the trailer and everyone looks either terrified or terrifying (see, New monsters, below).

A quarry

Doctor Who 9

Look at that lovely big quarry. Memories of ‘The Hand of Fear’, ‘Utopia’ and a hundred other episodes.

In a trailer that includes some beautiful shots of alien worlds, the show hasn’t forgotten its roots… or its budget. Well, they had to save up for filming the opener in Tenerife.

Last year they did Lanzarote for ‘Kill the Moon’. Will Peter Capaldi make it round all the Canary Islands before the end of his tenure? La Gomera is lovely in the winter. No quarries there.
