2015 is fast approaching, but what’s in store to keep our screens flickering and our minds off the drudgery of everyday life?
Spooks: The Greater Good
Terrorists! Conspiracies! Harry Pearce in a tuxedo! Jon Snow with a gun! Split screen! We at CultBox love Spooks, and it looks like this long-awaited big-screen outing (arriving in UK cinemas in May) will be greater than good.
Spooks veteran Bharat Nalluri is directing, and promises some great action sequences and plenty of twists and turns, saying that the movie will just be as unsparing to its characters as the show was. No word on whether a deep fat fryer will be involved though…
SS-GB
Alternate history by the man who created Harry Palmer (Len Deighton, pub quizzers), and adapted for TV by Skyfall‘s writers? Sounds promising.
This five-part BBC One drama is set in a post-war 1940s where the Nazis have won and London is under German occupation, and one Scotland Yard detective faces the choice of collaborating with the SS or working with the resistance. Sign us up. To the drama, not the SS.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
How many times have you watched the teaser for Episode VII? ‘Not enough times’ is always the answer. 2015’s most anticipated movie arrives in December and now feels a little less far, far away every day.
The old guard of Hamill, Ford, and Fisher are joined by the new generation, including Attack the Block‘s John Boyega, About Time’s Domhnall Gleeson and Gwendoline Christie of Game of Thrones fame. With a mix of nostalgia and bold new direction, already it feels like the Force is strong with this one.
Tatau
From the makers of Being Human, the first drama to be commissioned by BBC Three since In the Flesh (still no word on that, #saveintheflesh) features Maori mythology and murder, and a mysterious tattoo, as two chaps on holiday are drawn into a strange adventure while on holiday in the Cook Islands.
Terminator: Genisys
Don’t worry about the stupyd name. You should maybe be more worried that this looks to be the gateway for a stealth reboot of the franchise, given the ‘past and future’ nature of the storyline.
Or maybe don’t worry. Especially because ex-Governor Arnie’s back as the titular T-800 (yay!), and Matt Smith is part of the cast in a major but unrevealed role (unrevealed, yay!). Franchise loyalty and sheer curiosity should be enough to draw cinema-goers to this instalment.
Thunderbirds are Go!
Things are looking very F.A.B here. It’s 50 years since the original aired in ‘SUPERMARIONATION’, and now Weta Workshop’s always dependable Pukeko Pictures have made 26 new episodes, using a mix of real sets and CGI characters (so no strings attached).
The voice cast includes Rosamund Pike as Lady Penelope, Kayvan Novak as Brains, and David Graham reprising his voice duties as Parker. There’s no airdate set yet, but it will air on CITV in 2015. We can’t wait.
Yonderland
A comedy that is both a) funny and b) something you can sit with the whole family and watch, is a rare thing indeed, so it’s good news that Sky1’s Yonderland will be back.
Also look out for the Yonderland/Horrible Histories troupe in their William Shakespeare’s ‘Lost Years’ movie, Bill, which is released in February.
