Some clips from the fourth episode of the Doctor Who 2024 series, 73 Yards, were released on official media.
Other clips were included in Doctor Who: Unleashed, the official Doctor Who podcast and on BBC one ads.
In 73 Yards, described as Welsh folk horror, the TARDIS lands on a clifftop on the Welsh coast. The Doctor and Ruby embark on the strangest journey of their lives. In the rain-lashed village pub, Y Pren Marw (The Dead Wood in Welsh), the locals sit in fear of ancient legends coming to life. “The Spiteful One” is mentioned by the local wise woman and a mysterious scroll bears the words “Rest in peace, Mad Jack.”
As the Doctor (Nucti Gatwa) and Ruby (Millie Gibson) step out of the TARDIS on the clifftop on the Welsh coast, the Doctor mentions Roger ap Gwilliam (Aneurin Barnard), a Welsh candidate in the Albion party who is described as the “Space Saviour”. Roger ap Gwilliam will turn up later in the episode.
The Doctor seems to be in the habit of not looking where he is walking. After stepping on a landmine in the last episode Boom, the Doctor blunders into a magic circle of sorts.
The doctor and Ruby have come upon a “circle of charms and little toy things.”
Ruby spies a woman (Hilary Hobson) in the distance and asks, “Who’s she?”
Ruby turns around and the Doctor is nowhere to be found, she can’t get in the TARDIS and the mysterious woman in the distance won’t answer her questions.
Ruby picks up a scroll from the charm circle and it reads, “Rest in Peace, Mad Jack.”
Ruby makes her way to the local pub, Y Pren Marw (The Dead Wood in Welsh).
The pub is populated by locals Thin Lucy (Elan Davies), Lowri Palin (Maxine Evans), Ifor Jones (Gwion Morris Jones) and local wise woman Enid Meadows (Dame Siân Phillips).
Ruby says, “We walked into this circle of charms and little toy things up on the clifftop.” Enid asks, “Did you break it?”
After hearing Ruby’s answer, Enid says, “This land is a powerful place.” and “Mad Jack is unbound.” Upon hearing this the locals become frightened and fear for their lives.
Ruby looks out the window to see the mysterious woman, who has followed her.
Ruby embarks on a journey to solve the mystery and reunite with the Doctor.
Her investigations take her into the orbit of Roger ap Gwilliam and his campaign.
