Here’s some sad news. Dudley Simpson, the composer of the music to dozens of classic Doctor Who stories, has died. He was 95 years old.
Born in Australia in 1922, Simpson first composed music for Doctor Who with the William Hartnell adventure, Planet Of Giants. It would begin a long relationship with the show, that saw him working on over 60 adventures, through to his last adventure, the Tom Baker story, Shada. He briefly appeared on screen in the show too, in an episode of The Talons Of Weng-Chiang.
His time on Doctor Who came to an end when John Nathan Turner took over as producer, and opted to go in another direction for its music.
Simpson continued writing music for television elsewhere, eventually retiring in the 1990s and returning home to Australia. He died on Saturday, and leaves behind an immense body of work. Rest in peace, Mr Simpson…
