Doctor Who spin-off films in Cardiff with Russell Tovey and Kate Stewart

On 17 and 18 October 2024, a crew filmed scenes for the the Doctor Who spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea, in Cardiff Bay.

On 17 October, the Artradius building in Cardiff was set-dressed as The Windsor.

At the filming, it was discovered that Russell Tovey’s character’s name is Barclay. Barclay appears to be a divisive figure with some admiring him and others blaming him. As he is escorted by UNIT troops while exiting an a armoured vehicle, people hold placards which read, “We Love you Barclay”, “Marry Me Barclay”, “You’re Our Hero”, “This is All Your Fault”, “Barclay is the Enemy”, “Traitor”, “Drown Yourself” and “Fish Lover”.

Russell Tovey changed into a suit to film further scenes.

Later, a night scene was filmed with Barclay running to a car.

More filming at the same location occurred the following day.

Co-writer Pete McTighe and actresses Jemma Redgrave and Francesca Corney showed up on location.

The War Between The Land and the Sea will feature Sea Devils. When the Doctor’s not in town, the whole of humanity is in trouble. When the fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT step into action as the land and sea wage war.

The cast announced for the five-part series so far are Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jemma Redgrave, Alexander Devrient, Ruth Madeley, Colin McFarlane, Patrick Baladi, Francesca Corney, Vincent Franklin, Adrian Lukis, and Mei Mac.

The series, is created by Doctor Who showrunner and executive producer Russell T Davies, who has co-written the series with Pete McTighe. Davies wrote Episodes One, Four and Five while McTighe wrote episodes Two and Three.

All five episodes are directed by Dylan Holmes Williams, who filmed the 2024 Doctor Who episodes 73 Yards and Dot and Bubble. Filming for the series will continue until right before Christmas 2024.
