According to Nicola Methven, TV editor of the Mirror, a new Doctor Who spin-off starring Jemma Redgrave will follow the adventures of UNIT, the Unified Intelligence Taskforce.
UNIT is an international organisation, first seen in the 1968 Doctor Who episode The Invasion, to investigate and combat paranormal and extraterrestrial threats to the planet Earth
Jemma Redgrave, in a role she has played since 2012, is rumoured to lead the series as Kate Stewart, the Chief Scientific Officer at UNIT.
The new series is said to be part of the expanded “Whoniverse” created by Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies as part of the BBC’s deal with Disney+.
Redgrave last appeared as Kate Stewart in the Doctor Who special The Power of the Doctor and will appear in Doctor Who Series 14 alongside the Fifteenth Doctor played by Ncuti Gatwa.
UNIT, and the soldiers it employs, will also make an appearance in the Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials.
The Mirror’s source said: “Doctor Who has always featured strong women in positions of authority.”
Monster spin-offs are also rumoured to be in the works.
Doctor Who will return in November 2023 with three 60th anniversary specials starring David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor. In the following festive period, Ncuti Gatwa will star in his first full Doctor Who episode as the Fifteenth Doctor. Doctor Who Series 14 starring Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson will debut in 2024.
