Doctor Who star Matt Smith has been (very, very vaguely!) discussing his character in the upcoming fifth Terminator movie.
Smith’s exact role in Terminator Genisys, released in UK cinemas next month, has been kept a closely guarded secret since it was announced that he was joining the movie last May.
The actor joked with Den of Geek: “Who am I? Well, my name is Matt. And I’m very excited to be a part of the new Terminator franchise.”
He elaborated slightly: “Obviously, I can’t talk in too much detail about the specifics of my character, but needless to say I have close interest and links to John Connor … we’ll have to wait and see the actual specifics of what I am. But it’s going to be interesting, is all I can say. It’s a very interesting part for me to take on, and different to the stuff I’ve done in the past … this is a completely different role to the Doctor, which again is one of the things that appealed to me, and hopefully allows me to stretch a few different muscles.”
The key point of interest here is the reference to his character as a “what” rather than a “who”.
Smith also confirmed that he is contracted for future films in the rebooted Terminator franchise: “I am part of the sequels, yes, so I’ll be around for two and three. Which is good. Keeps me employed for a while!”

The official synopsis for Terminator Genisys reads: “When John Connor (Jason Clarke), leader of the human resistance, sends Sgt. Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) and safeguard the future, an unexpected turn of events creates a fractured timeline. Now, Sgt. Reese finds himself in a new and unfamiliar version of the past, where he is faced with unlikely allies, including the Guardian (Arnold Schwarzenegger), dangerous new enemies, and an unexpected new mission: To reset the future…”
The cast also includes Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney (A Good Day to Die Hard) as Kyle Reese and Zero Dark Thirty’s Jason Clarke as John Connor.
The new season of Doctor Who has been filming in Cardiff since January and will begin on BBC One in September.
