Marvel’s Loki series will see the character “mature in a different way”

The show has delayed filming in Atlanta for now…

It won’t hit the Disney+ streaming service until 2021, but production on Marvel’s Loki TV series, which will see Tom Hiddleston reprise his role as the god of mischief, was in full swing stateside before the pandemic hit.

Hiddleston’s co-star, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, has a still-mysterious role to play, but she says that in the show we’ll “get to see [Loki] mature in a different way. It’s going to be exciting for the fans to really see Tom and that character take the centre of the story.”

She also praised Loki director Kate Herron, who is helming the entire project.

“Kate’s obviously earned her stripes to be in that production,” the Fast Color actress said. “More than anything I was excited that it was being directed by one director. To be a part of a limited series [that’s] not just like episodic television, where you have a different director every week, Kate really was going to direct all of the episodes, which I’ve never had that experience on TV. I know it’s obviously been done, but personally I’ve not had the experience of doing several episodes with the same director.”

Mbatha-Raw doesn’t know when filming will resume on the Marvel series yet, noting that “it’s all still being figured out at the moment”.

Loki will find us catching up with a post-Avengers: Endgame version of the character, who has plucked himself from the timeline between the first Avengers film and the last after acquiring a Tesseract lost by Tony and co. during last year’s blockbuster time heist. The plot of the series has Loki popping up at various notable historical moments and making a nuisance of himself, which soon catches the attention of the Time Variance Authority, an organisation from the comics that will go on to play a much bigger role here than they ever did on the page.

The latest addition to the cast of Loki was none other than Richard E. Grant, Variety revealed. The actor’s role is being kept under wraps, but he joined Owen Wilson, Mbatha-Raw and Sophia Di Martino as Hiddleston’s acting cohorts. Grant is becoming a staple of the Disney bank of actors. He previously appeared in James Mangold’s Marvel film, Logan, as Dr. Zander Rice, and as General Enric Pryde in last year’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

More on Loki soon.
