Picard’s final season approaches…
Updated 12/12/22: As old colleagues are called to action, we get another look at the silver-haired Worf.
With appearances through all seven seasons of The Next Generation, and then a further four on Deep Space Nine, it’s hard to think of a character with a deeper impact on Star Trek than Worf (Michael Dorn).
Beginning as more of a background character on the Enterprise, Starfleet’s first Klingon officer assumed the position of Security Chief after the death of Tasha Yar. Season 3 of that show bumped him up to a full Lieutenant’s rank, where he stayed for its remaining four seasons.
Transferring to DS9, he became a Lieutenant Commander, and a husband to Jadzia Dax, before becoming the Federation’s Ambassador to the Klingon homeworld at the end of that series. As the Next Generation crew shifted to the big screen, he appeared in all their movie outings from Generations though to Nemesis.
Now, thanks to TV Line, we have first look at Worf reuniting with his former Captain.
Apparently, as well as embracing pacifism (as we learned in the NYCC 2022 trailer), Worf now carries a new blade; his sword, called a Kur’leth, has been designed by Star Trek visual effects guru Dan Curry, creator of the famous Klingon Bat’leth.
We’ll keep you posted on Picard. The show returns for its third and final season on February 16th, 2023.

Picard Season 3 will honour the legacy of DS9 and Voyager too
Showrunner Terry Matalas has been speaking Picard‘s final season and its links to all of 90s Star Trek.
While we’re still getting out heads around the approach of Christmas, the Star Trek promotional engine is gearing up again.
The third and final series of Picard, the Star Trek: The Next Generation sequel series, is due in February and unites most of the original show’s stars.
Ahead of its launch, showrunner Terry Matalas has spoken to Den of Geek about what to expect from Picard’s final hurrah. In fact, with the number of returnees joining Patrick Stewart, Matalas even wonders if the show is mis-named:
“In my mind, I would’ve called it ‘Star Trek Legacy’. I mean, it is truly a Picard story. He is the focus. But the spirit of it is different than seasons one and two, just because of what it is.”
The piece goes on to suggest that Picard Season 3 acts as many things, including a love-letter to fans of 90’s Star Trek. Matalas explains:
“I just felt like Picard season three needed to feel like it fit into this universe. It was very important to me, first and foremost, that it treads new ground, but [also feel] like a continuation of the stories and arcs set up 30 years ago. There’s a fine line between fan service and just honoring the universe that you’re in. So, I just went full tilt at the things that mattered to me.
Deep Space Nine and Voyager
He also confirms that the contribution of both TNG successors shows, Deep Space Nine and Voyager will be acknowledged. As well as the inclusion of Worf (Michael Dorn), who moved into DS9 when TNG ended, events from that show will play a part:
“I think that it’s important to Deep Space Nine fans to feel seen. It’s a continuation of Voyager too, of course, with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) in our show. If you’re going to be in this time period, there’s such a rich opportunity to honor what came before.”
Even more, there is a suggestion that this final season of Picard need not be the end for all the characters. Matalas says:
“I would love nothing more. Please send your letters to Paramount+ and [producers] Secret Hideout.”
The Den of Geek piece has plenty more, including comments from Gates McFadden (Dr Beverly Crusher) and Jonathan Frakes (Will Riker). Frakes has also directed episodes for the show.
Additionally, the newest version of Den of Geek’s quarterly print magazine carries a season preview.
Star Trek: Picard Season 3 lands at Paramount+ on February 16th, 2023. In the UK, it streams on Prime.
