Picard Season 3 brings his Enterprise crew back together for a last hurrah – but does that include Tasha Yar?
(Updated 30/08/22): Denise Crosby has confirmed an appearance for the ill-fated Tasha.
Last month, we were chuffed to bring you the news that Picard‘s final season would be leaning heavily into its Star Trek: The Next Generation roots. Many of that show’s original cast have been announced as reprising their roles for Admiral (Captain) Picard’s final hurrah.
However, there appeared to be one notable absence. While last season brought a brief moment with Will Wheaton’s Wesley Crusher and a return for Whoopi Goldberg’s Guinan, there was no mention of the Enterprise-D’s original Security Chief Tasha Yar as played by Denise Crosby.
Now, thanks to a comment shared from the recent Star Trek convention ’56-Year Mission Las Vegas’, which was picked up by TrekMovie.com, it appears Tasha will make play a part in the story – somehow.
In answer to a direct question about her potential involvement in Picard Season 3 with her old crewmates, Crosby said:
“Oh. I don’t want to give away too much. But I’m going to tell you that you will see Tasha Yar, but I’m not going to tell you how. You’ve got to watch.”
Of course, despite her character being killed off during Season 1 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, there are numerous ways this could happen. Crosby returned to ST:TNG original run via a flashback, an alternate timeline and as her own villainous half-Romulan offspring!
We’ll keep you posted on Picard Season 3.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 – teaser shows us the returning Next Gen cast
Picard Season 3 brings his Enterprise crew back together for a last hurrah.
We’ve known for a while that Season 3 of Picard features a number of returning characters from his Enterprise days.
To facilitate this, there was a clearing of the decks across Season 2; Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill), Cristóbal Rios (Santiago Cabrera), Elinor (Evan Evagora) and Isa Briones (Data’s daughters & Soong’s generic experiments) all departed the show one way or another.
While Rafi (Michelle Hurd) and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) remain, we’re looking forward to seeing the return of Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), Worf (Michael Dorn), Geordi La Forge (Levar Burton) and Dr Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden).
Of course, Riker and Troi have both already appeared in the show’s first season, with Riker also riding to the rescue in its finale.
“You’re only as good as those around you. As long as you and your crew remain steadfast you are never without hope.”
Across the promo, it’s great to see the crew all looking fabulous – we’re big fans of the silver-bearded Worf! It’s also interesting to spot that Seven of Nine, or rather Annika Hansen, is in Starfleet uniform, seemingly sporting the rank of Commander.
Other familiar faces?
Naturally, if this season is the last hurrah for The Next Generation era, we might expect a few other old friends too.
Last season saw a brief cameo for Wesley Crusher, and two seasons so far have offered various iterations of Data (Brent Spiner) and members of the Soong family. We also saw Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) and Q (Jon de Lancie) last season too, although the latter’s appearance seemed final.
A female villain
With confirmation that Season 3’s new villain is female, showrunner Terry Matalas has quashed one fan’s theory that Denise Crosby might reappear as Romulan Commander Sela. (Sela was the daughter of the ill-fated USS Enterprise-D Security Chief Tasha Yar from an alternate timeline).
Answering a question on Twitter, he has however promised a nod to Tasha in the new season.
It’s not Sela. It is a new character. But here is definitely a nod to Tasha in the new season. https://t.co/GfmrE3We4s

Whoever this new villain is, we look forward to finding out – especially as Matalas has also said:
“It is a new character. Played by someone you’ve seen a million times before. Someone I’ve always wanted to work with. And… wow. You’re not ready.”
Star Trek: Picard returns for its final season in 2023.
