Gotham Knights – the CW is developing another Batman spin-off

Set in a post-Batman Gotham, an unlikely alliance is formed…

While the new Robert Pattinson fronted The Batman is incoming next year, with multiple spin-offs already in progress, and Batwoman and Pennyworth both returning for third seasons, you’d be forgiven for thinking we were at peak-Bat. However the CW, home to the Arrowverse, has other ideas.

According to Variety, the Batwoman team are busy cooking up a further bat-based show, entitled Gotham Knights.

Here’s the premise:

“…in the wake of Bruce Wayne’s murder, his rebellious adopted son forges an unlikely alliance with the children of Batman’s enemies when they are all framed for killing the Caped Crusader. And as the city’s most wanted criminals, this renegade band of misfits must fight to clear their names.

But in a Gotham with no Dark Knight to protect it, the city descends into the most dangerous it’s ever been. However, hope comes from the most unexpected of places as this team of mismatched fugitives will become its next generation of saviors known as the Gotham Knights.”

Despite the familiar moniker, the show won’t be related to the forthcoming action role-playing game of the same name. It draws its name from a comic series which ran between 2000 and 2006.

Adoptive Son

A post-Batman Gotham is something we certainly haven’t seen on screen before. The identity of his adoptive son makes for an interesting proposition too; there are a number of possibilities, from one of the various Robins to someone entirely new. The notion of the offspring of Batman’s enemies intrigues too.

Gotham Knights is coming from writers Natalie Abrams, James Stoteraux and Chad Fiveash, who are the Batwoman team. There’s no suggestion of links to the wider Arrowverse shows though, which makes sense given it’s later timeframe.

Natalie Abrams is a co-executive producer too, with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden of Berlanti productions.

There’s little else out there in terms of information about the show just yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
