Geordi La Forge, Worf and Dr Crusher will all play a part in Picard’s final season.
While Picard season two continues to air, the show’s final season is also in the can; the two runs of the show have been made back-to-back with the third intended as Picard’s last hurrah.
In the show so far, which tells the story of the former Captain, we’ve seen a few familiar faces. Brent Spiner has starred as Data, plus various iterations of the Soong family. The first season also spent time with former First Officer Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis). The second season has brought us old foe Q (John de Lancie) and multiple iterations of the Picard’s ally Guinan too.
Now, as part of the annual celebration of First Contact Day (April the 5th is a significant in-universe date), it’s confirmed that the remainder of the regular Star Trek: The Next Generation crew will participate in Picard season 3. LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn and Gates McFadden are reprising their roles as Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge, Security Chief Worf and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Beverly Crusher.
Making the announcement, Picard’s showrunner and executive producer Terry Matalas said:
“I remember watching the premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation almost 34 years ago with my father like it was yesterday. It was the spark that ignited my love for science fiction. So, it’s most fitting that the story of Jean-Luc Picard ends honoring the beginning, with his dearest and most loyal friends from the U.S.S. Enterprise. It would be an understatement to say that giving these characters a proper send-off is an honor. The entire Star Trek: Picard team and I can’t wait for fans to experience this final, high-stakes, starship-bound adventure in season three!”
What about Wesley?
Interestingly, there’s no mention of Wil Wheaton. The actor played Wesley Crusher across the first three seasons of ST:TNG before leaving for Starfleet Academy in the fourth. Love him or loathe him, the character was an essential part of the show.
Wesley appeared twice more during the show’s later seasons and even popped up for the wedding scenes of Star Trek: Nemesis.
We also wonder if there might be a role for Denise Crosby too, the show’s ill-fated security officer Tasha Yar. Although she died in the show’s first season it didn’t stop her returning on more than one occasion before!
Picard season 2 is on Paramount+ (and in the UK on Prime Video.) Season 3 is expected sometime in 2023.
