James Wan is set to executive produce a new Robocop show for Prime Video.
Since Amazon purchased MGM, they’ve understandably been looking at the studio’s back catalogue for potential IP to exploit. One of the properties they’re making progress on is Robocop.
Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 movie is a classic – blending gore and tragedy with some dark satire of corporate excess. However, it’s two sequels and a 2014 reboot failed to recapture the magic of the original.
Now, however, The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Prime Video wants a new television series, with filmmaker James Wan as executive producer.
It’s not the first time Robocop has come to the small screen, as the movie spawned animated and live-action series, both short-lived. More recently, the character has been diluted into popular culture, fronting adverts for Direct Line Insurance.
Based on the synopsis, the new Robocop show won’t be reinventing the wheel:
‘The series will follow the premise of the films, focusing on a giant tech conglomerate which collaborates with the local police department to introduce a technologically advanced enforcer to combat rising crime – a police officer who’s part man, part machine.’
Taking its cues from the original, we could see Robocop sitting alongside Prime’s adult-oriented genre shows like The Boys.
Amazon MGM Studios are producing the series in-house, with Peter Ocko (Moonhaven, Black Sails) serving as writer/showrunner/executive producer.
It’s early days, but we’ll keep you posted on Robocop.
