Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S3 confirmed, S2 date imminent

The news comes from the Strange New Worlds executive producer Akiva Goldsman.

In news we’ve picked up from Trek Central, there is confirmation that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is to continue beyond upcoming second series.

The show chronicles the early adventures of the U.S.S. Enterprise, pre-Captain Kirk, and span out of the second season of Star Trek: Discovery. It follows the doomed Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Number One (Rebecca Romjin) and Spock (Ethan Peck), first seen in the original Star Trek pilot The Cage.

Strange New Worlds has won over fans with its return to a monster-of-the-week format and introduced engaging younger takes on characters like Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) and Dr. M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun). Plus, it has added a number of new faces including Christina Chong’s Lt. La’an Noonien-Singh and Melissa Navia’s Lt Ortegas.

The show’s executive producer Akiva Goldsman was interviewed at a M.I.T. Media Lab event called ‘Beyond The Cradle’. There, as well as saying that Strange New Worlds season 3 is about to begin filming, he discussed the diverse types of stories this latest iteration of Star Trek can tell and talked about the development of Picard.

Goldsman also confirmed that a start date for the highly anticipated second run of Strange New Worlds is imminent.

Last Show Standing?

With the third and reportedly final series of Picard airing currently, and the recent news that Discovery’s fifth series is also to be its last, Strange New Worlds is the last live-action series standing.

There’s been continuous chatter of a Starfleet Academy show or a Section 31 spin-off starring Michelle Yeoh. However, you might imagine plans for the latter could in disarray in the wake of Yeoh’s recent Oscar win for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Doubtless the Star Trek universe will want something new in live-action to offer to keep all those Paramount+ subscribers though!

It should be noted that there’s no official announcement from Paramount+ yet, where the series airs. We’ll keep you posted.
