Sky & HBO offer us a longer look at the epic journey at the heart of show in the new The Last of Us trailer. 

With the much-anticipated series on us in mid-January, there’s now a full trailer for The Last of Us.

The HBO show, which is airing on Sky in the UK, adapts the critically acclaimed video game of the same name.

The show takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal and heartbreaking journey; the pair must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

While September brought us a teaser, offering hints of the epic journey that lies ahead. This new trailer give us a better sense of the characters; Pedro Pascal, freed of his Mandalorian helmet, plays Joel while Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones‘ feisty Lady Lyanna Mormont) is Ellie.

The show has gained a strap line: “When you’re lost in the darkness, look for the light” and it’s backed by a haunting version of the 80s Norwegian synth-pop classic ‘Take on Me’ by Aha. That’s interspersed with dramatic percussion as we see more of the challenges that lie ahead for the pair. There’s also a look at some of the wider cast, including Nick Offerman as Bill.

The Last of Us comes from writer and executive producer Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann (the original video game). It is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television, executive produced by Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Rose Lam. The production companies involved are PlayStation Productions, Word Games, The Mighty Mint, and Naughty Dog.

For its release, Sky Atlantic are rolling out the same level of support afforded to Game of Thrones. It lands at 2am on Monday mornings, simulcast with the US, and will be available via NOW too.

The first episode arrives on Monday, January 16th 2023.
