Alternate ending for Blink

Steven Moffat shares first draft script of Doctor Who episode ‘Blink’

In conjunction with a Halloween Doctor Who watch-along of the Seres 3 episode Blink, Steven Moffat shared his first draft script of the episode titled Sally Sparrow and the Weeping Angel.

Meaning to share it on the day of the watch-along, Moffat had some trouble opening the original draft as it was saved in an obsolete format from 2007. After consulting former and current showrunners Russell T Davies and Chris Chibnall, it was ultimately the screenwriting duo of  Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran who where able to provide the necessary software to open the document.

“Mind you, Russell always rather liked this ending – because, in his words, “‘it was a bit more lesbian,’” Steven Moffat explained.

In the original ending, the besieged TARDIS takes Sally Sparrow and Larry Nightingale back to 1969 to pick up the Doctor then return to their present day to see the four forever quantum-locked Weeping Angels. We also learn that the Angels have X-ray vision and can see in the dark. Instead of providing the Doctor a dossier, Sally Sparrow writes a book about her adventure under the name Sally Nightingale. The word blink is only used four times and only once by the Doctor in his DVD Easter egg.

Sally Sparrow and the Weeping Angel was not the first appearance of Sally Sparrow in Doctor Who fiction written by Steven Moffat. Moffat also wrote the short story What I Did In My Christmas Holidays – By Sally Sparrow for the 2006 Doctor Who Annual. He based Blink on his short story.
